› Microscopic Features:

• Smaller than a normal RBC (usually much smaller, similar to normal platelets)
• Lacks the darker staining platelet granules

› Normal % blood-PB, marrow-BM, lymphoid tissue-LN:

• PB: Rare to None
• BM: Rare to None
• LN: None

› May Resemble:

• Stain precipitate
• Malaria infection [Compare]
• Babesia infection [Compare]

› Differential Diagnoses:

Increased numbers may be see in: Myeloid neoplasms (e.g. MDS, Acute leukemia or Myeloproliferative Neoplasms) Gray platelet syndrome (Alpha storage pool disease)

› Classic Immunophenotype:

• CD41+
• CD61+

• Lack of platelet granules may be indicative of an underlying abnormality of the platelets such as but not limited to the inability of producing certain platelet granules.
