Exchange transfusion

Removal of a component of a patient's blood with subsequent repletion of that same component from donated blood products. An examples of an exchange transfusion includes red cell exchange in patients with sickle cell disease, whereby blood which contains a high percentage of sickled cells are removed and packed red blood cell units without sickled cells are transfused.
