Q: Is a downloadable application available?
A: Yes, an iPhone (Glossary and Atlas) and iPad App (Glossary and Atlas) are now available!
(Please note that there are some differences in app functionality between the iPhone version and iPad version.)
Q: Is there a glossary flash-card app?
A: Yes: a web app and an iOS app. A quiz app, HemeQuiz, is also on the App Store.
Q: When will the online textbook be out?
A: The online textbook is under development and will be available in the near future. Its table of contents and preview diagrams are on the Additional Contents page.
Q: Can I use the images in my lecture or website?
A: Individual educational use with attribution is allowed; anything else needs written permission. Please read the disclaimers.
Atlas Tutorial
The full-featured Atlas has many different options and tools:
This is the main atlas page. Click on each category to either see more information or open up a popup box containing a list of specific entities. At the bottom of the page, there is a link that takes you to a virtual peripheral smear: “Test your knowledge: Peripheral blood smear.” Use this to review entities that may be found in peripheral blood.
A list of entities for the selected category is displayed. You may choose a single entity by clicking the link, or choose multiple entities by selecting the checkboxes and clicking “Compare Selected.” Notice that some entities are links to full page diagrams.
The entities will each be displayed in a vertical column, organized by subheadings. There are several options you can do: try hovering over the main picture to magnify it, clicking to see a full sized image, clicking on [Compare] for a side-by-side comparison with “look-a-likes”, and reviewing the cartoon representation at the bottom (drag the red blood cell over the cartoon to compare sizes).
The screenshots above show the previous design; the layout has been modernized but every feature works the same way.
Glossary Tutorial
Several unique features and functions are available on the Glossary page:
(1) Use the search field to quickly find a term. As you type, a list of terms matching your search query will be displayed. Click on the term to see the full entry. This search feature is also located on the home page for convenience.
(2) The Glossary is organized in alphabetical order. Click on a letter to quickly jump to that section within the page. Click “Back to top ^” or the back arrow on your browser to return to the top of the page.
(3) A checkbox is to the left of each Glossary term. Click on the terms you are interested in, then click on the “Compare Selected” button to see the terms side-by-side or click on the “Study mode from selected terms” button to generate a study list of selected terms.
(4) A predetermined study set has been created from selected Glossary terms. Select a study set from the drop down menu to see the study list in a “flash card” format.
(5) Links within the glossary definitions open up convenient popup boxes with the definition inside. Use this as a quick resource as you are reading and learning about the Glossary term. Terms that also appear in the Atlas carry an “Atlas Link” button.
