Agranular Platelets

›Microscopic Features:
- Smaller than a normal RBC (usually much smaller, similar to normal platelets)
- Lacks the darker staining platelet granules
›Normal % blood-PB, marrow-BM, lymphoid tissue-LN:
- PB: Rare to None
- BM: Rare to None
- LN: None
›May Resemble:
- Stain precipitate
- Malaria infection
- Babesia infection
›Differential Diagnoses:
Increased numbers may be see in:
Myeloid neoplasms (e.g. MDS, Acute leukemia or
Myeloproliferative Neoplasms)
Gray platelet syndrome (Alpha storage pool disease)
