Haptoglobin

A serum protein that can bind free hemoglobin. Hence, after intravascular hemolysis, the free haptoglobin binds the released hemoglobin molecules so the levels of the measured free haptoglobin will fall. Note: A low haptoglobin lab value could be secondary to an intravascular hemolysis or sometimes due to severe extravascular hemolysis.
