Hemoglobinopathy
Genetic diseases that are associated with abnormal hemoglobins due to a mutation that usually leads to a structural abnormality in the hemoglobin molecule. Examples include Sickle cell disease (HbSS), HbSC, HbE, and HbCC disease. In contrast to hemoglobinopathies, the defect in thalassemias leads to underproduction of the globin chains rather than a structural abnormality.
