Complement

Group of proteins (~30) that, once activated, are used to help destroy pathogens in the body. Many complement proteins occur in serum as inactive enzyme precursors (zymogens), and others reside on the cell surfaces. Some red blood cell antibodies can activate the complement cascade and cause hemolytic transfusion reactions.
