›Microscopic Features:

  • 2-3x larger than a mature RBC
  • Low nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio (more cytoplasm than nucleus)
  • Kidney bean-shaped Nucleus with nucleus indentation (more than 1/2 the diameter indented) and mature chromatin (clumped)
  • Nucleoli are absent
  • More cytoplasm with only secondary granules
  • Secondary (specific) granules are neutrophilic (lilac)

›Normal % blood-PB, marrow-BM, lymphoid tissue-LN:

  • PB: Rare scattered
  • BM: Scattered
  • LN: None

›May Resemble:

Infections (especially bacterial infections)
Myeloproliferative disorders (e.g. CML)
Leukemoid reaction

In normal blood the band forms are almost all neutrophilic and eosinophilic and basophilic band forms are confined to the bone marrow when present
